Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden

At Nhill College, the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program (SAKG) offers Year 3 to 6 students a unique, hands-on learning experience.  Each week, classes rotate to participate in two sessions either in the kitchen or the garden.  They engage in every aspect of growing, harvesting, and preparing fresh, seasonal produce.

Program Highlights:

Garden Activities: Students actively participate in planting, maintaining, and harvesting the school’s garden.  They learn about composting, soil preparation, seed collection, and plant propagation, all under the guidance of our Garden Specialist.

Kitchen Sessions: In the kitchen, students use the garden’s produce to prepare healthy meals.  They develop essential kitchen skills, including food preparation, cooking techniques, and basic knife skills.

Life Skills: Beyond gardening and cooking, the program fosters teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and creative thinking, helping students develop important life skills.

The SAKG program at Nhill College not only teaches students how to grow and prepare nutritious food but also promotes positive food habits, environmental sustainability, and the joy of sharing meals together.
