Foundation Literacy and Numeracy Programs

SoundsWrite

SoundsWrite has been implemented in Foundation to Year 3 to improve students’ literacy levels in their reading and spelling. It is a phonics programme that teaches the three essential skills of segmenting, blending and phoneme manipulation (stretching, blending and manipulating sounds) necessary for reading and spelling on a daily basis. SoundsWrite has improved students’ self-esteem around reading and writing. The program has developed stronger spellers and students who transfer their phonics knowledge straight into their written work. This has allowed teachers to develop a curriculum with strong links between speaking, listening, reading and writing from the start of their school life.

All Primary Teachers and Education Support Staff have undertaken extensive training in the SoundsWrite program and are extremely well qualified to provide the solid foundation your child needs as they begin their educational journey at Nhill College.

Primary Maths Specialist Program

Another key focus of every day is the development of student Numeracy skills.  Maths classes are usually held each day between recess and lunch times, with a specialised Maths classroom set up to cater to the individual learning needs of students in Years F-2.  This room houses a large range of resources to help engage the children with hands-on tasks.  In F-2, students begin to develop a love of Maths by solving problems that are relevant to them while developing an understanding of using maths in everyday situations.  When possible, students are engaged in hands-on activities in the outdoor learning space known as our Maths Garden.  This purpose-built facility helps engage students in maths by making their learning fun and active.

Nhill College is extremely fortunate to have two staff members participating in the Primary Maths Specialist Program which is designed to upskill our primary teachers to become specialists in Mathematics.  A Maths specialist serves as a support position for both teachers and students in regards to the Mathematics curriculum.  Their duties revolve around creating an improved school-wide Mathematics plan that ensures coverage of the whole curriculum and includes appropriate testing, analysis of data enabling a focus on individual students' strengths and weakness, and providing resources and assistance for all staff.  This select entry program provides our staff with with access to some of the best maths teachers in Australia to help us strengthen and build upon our numeracy program.

Kinder Transition Video and 360° Virtual Tour

Due to restrictions related to COVID-19, we are once again unable to welcome families on-site to visit our school, meet our staff and inspect our fantastic facilities and resources.   To help provide prospective parents with a snapshot of what life is like at Nhill College, we have developed a Transition Video and 360° Virtual Tour of our school.  Please take some time to check them out below...

Staff Profiles

During lockdown, we were not able to welcome prospective families on-site to introduce them to our amazing staff.  As a result, we decided to create a series of video profiles to share with families through our Website, Newsletter and Facebook page.   We have re-posted these profiles below.  Please take a few minutes to meet the following teachers who work predominantly with students in the Early Years.

Mrs Kerber (Foundation)

Miss Smith (Years 1-2)

Mr Dahlenburg (Year 3-4)

Year 7 Transition Information

 October

Year 6 students at Nhill College's feeder schools - St Patrick's School and Nhill Lutheran School - have already received transition booklets from our Year 7 Co-ordinator, Miss King.  Thank you to all those families who have returned enrolment forms - you should have received confirmation of your enrolment from Miss King recently.

A Year 6 into Year 7 Transition Evening will be held on-site in October (pending restrictions) at Nhill College.  Details will be sent to families soon outlining the time and date on which this evening will be held.

Nhill College recognises transition as a very important time for all and has in place full week of the Headstart Transition Program which is designed to ease the stress for both parents and students. During this Headstart week, which runs from the 5th - 9th of December, students will learn about the school in a more in-depth way than any transition booklet can provide. Classes will begin their curriculum, provide essential information about class expectations, and may even begin assessments. Hence, it is essential that your child attends this week in order for them to familiarise themselves with the school and its processes and be ready to start secondary school in 2023.

If you have any questions regarding Year 7 at Nhill College in 2024, please contact the office or Miss King on 5391 2111.
