English / Literacy In Junior Classrooms

Literacy forms the foundation of our early years program with a significant part of each morning dedicated to providing a range of rich activities designed to engage students in the development of core reading, writing, oral language and listening skills.

Mathematics / Numeracy

Another key focus of every day is the development of student Numeracy skills. Maths classes are usually held each day between recess and lunch times, with a specialised Maths classroom set up to cater to the individual learning needs of students in Years F-2.

When possible, students are engaged in hands-on activities in the outdoor learning space known as our Maths Garden. This purpose-built facility helps engage students in maths by making their learning fun. Staff often take their classes outside to use these resources, and students are frequently observed engaging in these outdoor Maths activities during their recess and lunch breaks.

Nhill College is extremely fortunate to have two staff members who are Primary Maths Specialists. Our Maths Specialists support teachers and students in regard to the Mathematics curriculum. Their duties revolve around creating a school-wide Mathematics plan, including curriculum and standardised testing, as well as providing resources for all staff.

Kinder Orientation and Ready Set for School

Nhill College recognises Foundation as a very important time for all and has in place a Kinder Orientation/Ready Set for School program held in Term 4, which will ease the stress for both parents and students. The Ready Set for School program will give kindergarten children an opportunity to attend specialised classes with Mrs Kerber. This program has been very successful in familiarising students with staff, students, and the physical layout of our school. Mrs Kerber has designed this program specifically to help children develop the skills they will need to successfully navigate their way through their first year of schooling.

Kinder Packs

Kinder Packs have been provided for all kinder children to help them get the best start to their schooling.  Each pack contains an enrolment form, a book, a getting ready for school checklist, tips on how to hold a pencil correctly, a uniform price list, canteen menu and much more.  Check it out below...

Year 7 Transition Information

 As of August 2024

Year 6 students in three local feeder schools - Nhill College, St Patrick's School and Nhill Lutheran School - have already received transition booklets from our Year 7 Co-ordinator, Mrs Kube.  Thank you to all those families who have returned enrolment forms - you should have received confirmation of your enrolment from Mrs Kube recently.

A Year 6 into Year 7 Transition Evening will be held on-site in October at Nhill College.  Details will be sent to families soon outlining the time and date on which this evening will be held.

Nhill College recognises transition as a very important time for all and has in place a full week of the Headstart Transition Program which is designed to ease the stress for both parents and students. During this Headstart week, which runs from the 9th - 13th of December, students will learn about the school in a more in-depth way than any transition booklet can provide. Classes will begin their curriculum, provide essential information about class expectations, and may even begin assessments. Hence, it is essential that your child attends this week in order for them to familiarise themselves with the school and its processes and be ready to start secondary school in 2025.

If you have any questions regarding Year 7 at Nhill College in 2025, please contact the office or Mrs Kube on 5391 2111.
