Physical Education, Sport & PMP

Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) at Nhill College: Years F-2

At Nhill College, our Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) is designed for students in Foundation to Year 2.  Running for two periods, weekly throughout the year, PMP uses a variety of indoor equipment and activities to develop essential physical and cognitive skills.

Key Benefits of PMP:

Physical Development: The program helps improve balance, coordination, agility, and overall physical fitness.

Cognitive Skills: Children enhance their memory, problem-solving abilities, and understanding of time, space, and body awareness.

Language and Social Skills: Through integrated activities, students develop language, listening skills, and social interactions, building confidence and self-esteem.

Program Highlights:

Multi-Sensory Activities: Designed to be fun and engaging, these activities target gross and fine motor skills, eye tracking, and short-term memory.

Holistic Growth: PMP nurtures the whole child, fostering physical ability, cognitive development, and social skills in a supportive environment.

By participating in PMP, our students become more confident, self-assured individuals, equipped with the skills needed to succeed in future sports and activities.

Physical Education

Physical Education is compulsory for students at Nhill College from Foundation to Year 10.  Foundation to Year 2 students are involved in the Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) for their Physical Education time.  In PMP, students engage in activities like balancing, jumping, catching, climbing, and crawling to develop motor skills, coordination, and spatial awareness.  In Physical Education, students develop the knowledge, understanding, and skills to strengthen their sense of self, build and manage satisfying relationships, and promote their health, safety, and physical activity participation.  The curriculum is designed to be contemporary, relevant, challenging, and enjoyable, encouraging children to be physically active while developing resilience and critical inquiry skills.  As students mature, they engage in a broad and balanced program that fosters active lifelong learning, enhancing their proficiency in movement skills, and the ability to confidently and competently participate in a range of physical activities.

In Years 9 and 10, students have the option of selecting Sport and Recreation and/or Health and Fitness electives.  The Sport and Recreation elective, allows students to explore and participate in alternative recreational activities, away from traditional main-stream sports.  The Health and Fitness elective focuses on an understanding of muscular and skeletal anatomy, energy systems, fitness components, fitness testing, training methods and training program design.  In VCE, students can choose to undertake Physical Education in Year 11 and 12.

School Sport

At Nhill College we compete in sports days throughout the year.  In Term One, our House Swimming Carnival is hosted at the Nhill Outdoor Pool next to the school grounds.  Our House Cross Country is held later in the term at the Nhill Golf Course.  In Term Two our House Athletics Carnival is held on the school ovals.

Students compete in three Houses: Batson (blue), Bond (yellow) and Macpherson (green).  Year 10, 11 and 12 students are given the opportunity to be elected to become House Captains, where they gain valuable leadership skills.  Students are encouraged to dress in their team’s colours and parents are welcome to come and support on the day.  Students who do not wish to take part in any events are able to assist staff with duties that support the running of the carnival.

We compete in the Little Desert Division and have the opportunity to compete in a range of different sports.  All students who qualify in their respected events have the opportunity and are encouraged to progress to Greater Western Region, and even School Sport Victoria State level, where students can compete against other schools.  Success in these events are recognised at the end of the year, as well as House Sports Day Age Group Champions and Overall Sports Champions.
